DC-2009将于2009年10月12-16日在韩国首尔召开,目前筹备工作已经展开,现希望征集会议主题,希望大家出谋划策。
前几届的主题:
Berlin DC-2008:“Metadata for Semantic and Social Applications”,征文和各类议程都很好地反映了这个主题。
Singapore DC-2007:“Application Profiles: Theory and Practice”
Manzanillo(Mexico) DC-2006:"Metadata for Knowledge and Learning"
Madrid DC-2005:"Vocabularies in Practice"
Shanghai DC-2004:“Matadata Across Languages and Culture"
Seattle DC-2003:”Supporting Communities of Discourse and Pratice"
Florence DC-2002:“Supporting Diversity and Convergence”
Tokyo DC-2001:No theme

semantic interoperability/architecture for digital libraries?

回复

Digital libraries is no longer a hot term. Do you want to get into the main stream and bigger issues?

回复

Yeah, you might be right. Do you have any suggestions? How about Cloud Computing? or Open Data? Korea National Library will opened a brand new DIBRARY the next year. They may will be willing to celebrate it somewhat with DC-2009. So it may be good to have some connection between the two events.

The Semantic Web is becoming more realistic than before, so the "Semantic / Data Web" is a new way to look into the immediate direction. Open data and linked data fit in well with this trend. On the other hand, in the library world there is still a role for moving into the digital world (with or without linked and open data). From both side, there must be some crosslines, e.g., around the structured data (we call them metadata). But it will be wasting time if we still stay with the human-generating-metadata approach. I think open data or linked data (as in the Semantic/Data Web) all call for research and development on automatic approaches --not only extracting and generating structured data, but also adding values to such data in order to maximize the usage, and to repurpose, aggregate, and transform such data and values in providing new levels of Web functionality.
Well, this is just my 2 cents...

Thanks a lot! I will give my idea with your 2 cents to Sam Oh for his consideration. My suggestion may will be "Semantic Architecture for Data Web" or "Interoperable Open Data". Or we can leave the word game to Sam. Hehe.

Hi keven, that’s great! Semantic interoperability is a key issue for knitting semantic web. DC would play special role for organizing, sharing knowledge via the web. It would be a prototype or framework of semantic identifying and describing in web based digital environment. This would be a bridge linking variety of semantic representations. So I suggest that the topic should be narrowed on the role which DC should play and how to play it. I also agree with Zeng Laoshi’s idea that we should bring the issues into much more broad perspectives. As Zeng laoshi said, it is impossible that semantic interoperability could be achieved merely by human-generating-metadata. Whatever open data or linked data, we need to build up a new paradigm to express semantic matter on the web, reuse existing semantic unites, and bring them together. So, the key words of the topic would be,
Semantic interoperability
New framework
New paradigm
New environment

原来高手过招全用E文啊,晕了~~

不过在晕之前,还是要顶一吓滴

目前的选择:
1) Semantic Interoperability of Linked Data (Makx and Tom)
2) Semantic Interoperability of Metadata and Ontology (Sam)
3) Semanitc Interoperablity of Linking Metadata and Communities (Shigeo)
你选择哪个?

回复

I think that "Linked Data" is a border concept. As a theme, it should not be too specific. So I choose the first one.

Just my 2 cents

回复

I also prefer the first one. or more specific, semantic interoperability of linked metadata

回复

I would like to go for the first one too. Sam always wants to push ontologies with Topic Maps, but the topic 'ontology' is either too close to other communities (discussed by various conferences and domains) or too far from metadata community's immediate actions.
'Data' could cover all kinds of things, including ontology items (concepts and relationships).
My only concern is that, if by the end of next year there are other new concepts, 'Linked Data' may become outdated or plutoed*.
W3C 2009 CFP used the word "Semantic / Data Web" instead of Linked Data.
The on-going, most recent discussion in the OOR is 'semantic wiki', it is not within the Linked Data movement, but it is still in the 'Semantic/Data Web". I can't find a better word. Maybe you guys just keep thinking...

*note: "to pluto" as "to demote or devalue someone or something, as happened to the former planet Pluto when the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union decided Pluto no longer met its definition of a planet." -- Word of the Year 2006.
